Lovable film crew added no pressure on pair
By Ryan Pyette, The London Free Press
Monday, October 28, 2013 10:40:40 EDT PM
Tessa Virtue rolled into Corus Quay on the Toronto Harbourfront Monday for a sneak peek at the six-part TV documentary being filmed about her and ice dance partner Scott Moir’s road back to the Olympics.
She had a makeup artist in tow, ready to apply a touch-up every few minutes. All this after the W Network camera crew captured a couple of days’ worth of behind-the-scenes footage of Virtue and Moir’s fifth Skate Canada title on the weekend.
This isn’t a normal-looking route to take to Sochi, Russia, in February, but it is one that could propel the “Canadian Sweethearts” from Vancouver four years ago to this country’s sporting conversation once again.
“I’m a very private person,” said Virtue, a 24-year-old Londoner. “I’m used to having cameras around as it relates to our skating sometimes and that comes with the territory. But letting them come home with me with my friends and family, I’m usually quite protective of them.
“I think that was a bit of an adjustment, but that’s something we wanted to share (in the series).”
Moir doesn’t think the show’s demands have added a burden in what their most pressure-packed season.
He hasn’t noticed a change in the duo’s dynamics, but did in the personality of his old pals when he brought the crew home for an afternoon out in “the rural parts of Southwestern Ontario.”
“My buddies, who I thought would step up and be jokesters, they were quiet and some of the other guys who maybe were a little more quiet day-to-day, they stepped up and enjoyed the limelight,” the 26-year-old Ilderton native said.
“There was a lot of razzing of me, that’s for sure.”
Virtue said the skaters lead extremely sheltered lives these days, getting up at five in the morning, hitting their training rink in Canton, Mich., and going to bed at 9 p.m. – the same time their show premieres on Thursday, Jan. 2.
The series will present what Virtue and Moir call an “honest light”. It details Moir’s protectiveness of his partner, the dynamics of their practice sessions alongside chief rivals Meryl Davis and Charlie White under common coach Marina Zoueva and, certainly, the role the London area plays as an escape from the everyday pressures.
Moir calls London and Ilderton their “true home”.
“When we go home to London on the weekends, it’s our way to get out of Canton and see family and friends,” Virtue said. “It’s healthy to have those times to let loose. We may still be in bed by 9 but we have time to go out for dinner. When we’re plugging away (in training), every minute is accounted for. “We don’t have much time to ourselves.”
The nagging memory of finishing second at worlds on home ice at Budweiser Gardens last spring still stings.
“It gives you that extra boost,” Moir said. “Not hearing our national anthem at home, it hurt and it’s still fresh in our minds.”
The pressures of the constant cameras and an Olympics outside of Canada don’t seem as daunting after that hometown eperience.
“It was good practice,” Virtue said. “Disappointing as it was coming second at the worlds in London, it sets up really nice coming up for this season and it’s nice coming in feeling a bit like the underdogs, even though we’re trying to defend our Olympic title.
“There’s two sides of it – there’s pressure because we are defending it and there’s also ‘we have the title’, so we have nothing to prove and we can really enjoy the experience.”
Before agreeing to the documentary project the skaters discussed the challenges of it with Saskatoon exercise scientist Bruce Craven.
“Coming into this, we might have been a tad apprehensive about how it would affect our training,” Virtue said. “Being in an Olympic year, we didn’t want any distractions. It’s been a really positive experience and we absolutely love the crew and that’s been an important part in this process.”
The early teasers are compelling. Virtue and Moir discuss how they aren’t best friends with their American counterparts, but co-exist in figure skating’s best rivalry.
“Our relationship is pretty good,” Moir said. “We have an understanding and we love to train with them. This (series) is the most accurate view of our lives day-to-day than anything else we’ve done. You’re going to see the ups-and-downs. You’re going to see the pressure. Some days, you’re going to see us melt down under the pressure and other days, feel like we’re on top of the world.”
They are trying to get back there – with the lights and makeup at hand.

Troupe Lovable aggiunto nessuna pressione sulla coppia
Con Ryan Pyette , The London Free Press
Lunedi , October 28 , 2013 10:40:40 PM EDT
